Auld Lang Syne (Farewell to Beech Pool)

You’ve driven down the highway that leads to this pool so many times you have a story about every building, every intersection, every landmark. Where the Jet Drive-In used to be, which motel once had a forty foot high red neon “X” for a sign, where the hookers/crack heads materialize when the sun goes down, etc.
One day it occurs to you that this is all going to end. You won’t be driving down this road anymore – the pool will be gone and so will you – but not today….
Today you’re going to head down Sierra Highway, turn left at the 7-11, head into the old neighborhood, and find yourself in front of a pile of rubble where a mid-century style apartment building used to stand – a quad style structure that was so small it had letters for the individual units instead of numbers.
You found it a long time ago – back when the lawn was green, the vandals/squatters hadn’t arrived yet, the front doorway was open, there was a two story façade of fleur-de-lis concrete block out front, and the pool was in pristine condition. Now you’re here at the end – standing in front of what’s left of the pool (enough to skate one last time) and the apartment building (not much except for a set of stairs leading to nowhere) in the middle of a vacant lot. The pool is still alive, but the bulldozer sitting nearby will soon take care of that.
Something reminds you of the other rounds you’ve played in your life – the long drives, perfect chip shots, and sweet putts. You’ve birdied some holes, bogeyed others, had a few eagles, and maybe a hole in one (or were you imagining that?). You’ve had your share of the roughs and taken a few mulligans.
You’re also reminded of the great courses you played on. Beech was one of the best, and you’ve played it for a long time. You’re not playing the same game you played back in the day, cuz’ you’re almost as old as the pool is by now. Your back bothers you when you swing and your reflexes won’t allow you to sink putts like you used to, but you’re still here, still playing the game.
This is the proverbial “ 18th hole” - not a bad place to be, assuming you did a decent job on the other 17….wherever you find yourself on the course in 2012, two words of advice: Play through…

Flashback Friday II

"Fear causes hesitation, and hesitation causes your worst fears to come true" ~ Bohdi
Once you commit to the Reedsport loop, it's only about 5 seconds out of your life - if you hesitate, it's considerably longer (not including the time spent getting airlifted out to Portland for a fractured jaw and concussion)....

Better Late Than Never: Matt Kline Benefit

Better late than never.....last month ADDIKT teamed up with Bacon, Lifeblood, Coldwar, and a ton of other sponsors to throw a benefit for Matt Kline, who is battling cancer. Some pretty heavy locals inhabit Matt's backyard - even his dog knows how to roll in to the pool (check the video). Two-legged ripper Frank Shaw ain't too shabby either....the day of the event brough 70 degree weather and a ton of pros, bros, and locals who showed up to skate and donate. Many thanks to all the product donors (Creature, NHS, Vagrant, Knucklehead, Tum Yeto, Bones, Juice, Lowcard, etc.) and Grind Life/Jack's Board House for getting it all put together. Skate & Destroy Cancer!

Results:
Best Trick Over Door: Mark Partain
Best Trick: Benji Galloway
Longest Grind: Frank Shaw
Highest Air: Brad McClain

Sunday Papers

"Well I got nuthin' against the press, they wouldn't print it if it wasn't true...."
Like Joe Jackson says, if its in the papers, it must be the truth.
If we are to believe the NY Times, there is a "resurgence" in the "sport" of backyard pool skating (when did it ever die?). Dogtown is out, Fresno is in, and fucking pools up and then getting as fucked up as possible is the new M.O. (when did that ever stop being the old M.O.?).
All that aside, not a bad article for an "outsider" publication (now if they would just stop calling it a "sport"):
NY Times:"Recession-Ravaged Yards, Inviting Skaters to Drop In"
Note to NY Times: You're blowing it - foreclosed homes are so 2009. Who needs foreclosed pool homes when you can build one in your own backyard? Beers, bud, no cops, and no "15 minute" rule....what's not to like? I suppose we'll be reading about this "new trend" in the papers in about 5 years.....
Happy B-Day Lloyd!!

Malibu's Most Wanted

Lance, tipping over into the channel PH: RUNAWAY

As Jamie Kennedy would say; "Don't Be Hatin'". The simple fact is that location, climate, inspiration, (and cash) have resulted in SoCal having more private pools per capita than anywhere in the world - it just is what it is. Even so, within the relatively rareified air of private pool properties there exists a pecking order. Situated somewhere between the Etnies pool and yet another private pool, there was rumoured to be a new candidate for the #1 spot; a near-perfect replica of Skate City's clover pool. The other day I got the text I had been waiting for; "Going out to Malibu - meet me there".....I called Big Al, fired up the '83 Veggie MBZ and headed for the coast.....
You ever heard that saying, "If it's too good to be true, it probably is?" Don't believe it. Somewhere between patience, perseverance, hard work, great timing, and a pinch of good luck there lies the promised land, and it looks a lot like this:

PH: RUNAWAY
We skated late into the day, enjoying the killer concrete, good friends, and gracious hospitality of our host, Angelo.

Angelo, FS grind PH: RUNAWAY
Big Al aired the channel, drank a "Fresca" courtesy of Angelo, and went out to the car for a smoke. On the way back home he told me it was the best day of his life.
File this one under: Living The (California) Dream....

Lance Mountain vs. The Ice Cream Man

Contests are so....1980's. We passed on the WCSK8 (isn't that ASPO spelled backwards?) event in SJ this weekend and opted to go to Lance's place instead. When we showed up, Lance informed us that he was so bored earlier in the day that he ate a whole pint of ice cream and was afraid he might "tip over" if he rode. We sat on the deck for a while talking about all things skate; contests (a necessary evil), shallow end trannies (Lance's is "fake" as he puts it), and why Neil Blender was the greatest skater of all time (fastplants are just one reason). Lance dropped in and instead of tipping over he fired off a fastplant. Big Al (all of 19 years old) was awestruck - never seen one before. Lance broke it down for him and 5 minutes later he had 'em wired. Then Lance went full-Neil-mode and made a fast plant to fakie. Big Al? Well, let's just say "Lance: 2, Big Al: 1" .....sometimes you eat the ice cream, sometimes the ice cream eats you......

Space Junk

A dead satellite (UARS) is hurtling toward earth and will rain down in North America tonight or tomorrow - there is a 1 in 2300 chance someone will get hit by debris as large as 300 pounds. If you are anywhere near Big Al when he blasts a stale fish, your odds of getting hit by space junk are more like 1 in 10. Good thing for me he held on to this one......I am hoping the UARS hits the Santa Clarita park tomorrow at peak traffic hours and takes out a couple hundred kids on razors.....seriously.

Skreech doc wins Best Film @ SWSX Film Festival

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
CONTACT:
ADDIKT SKATEBOARDS
info@addiktksateboards.com

“Dragonslayer”, featuring ADDIKT Skateboard’s Josh “Skreech” Sandoval, wins Best Film and Best Cinematography documentary awards at the 2011 SWSX Film Conference & Festival

Venice, CA March 16th, 2011 – After being touted by The Documentary Blog as one of its “Top 10 Docs to Look Out For in 2011”, “Dragonslayer” received the Grand Jury Winner and Best Cinematography honors at last night’s SWSX Film Festival awards ceremony.
Dragonslayer follows ADDIKT Skateboard’s Josh “Skreech” Sandoval as he navigates the suburban flotsam and jetsam of California’s foreclosure debacle, which includes skateboarding, love, drugs, and stray glimpses of unusual beauty.
Skreech was skating at an undisclosed location in the San Joaquin Valley area and was unavailable for comment.
Billy Runaway, a creative consultant for the film, was quoted as saying, “Major congrats to award winners Tristan Patterson and Eric Koretz. This film’s skate scenes are some of most realistic portrayals of what skateboarding is actually like for hardcore skaters – skateboarding is a lifestyle, not some bulls*** media event like you see on TV. These guys found great characters/real skaters in the form of Skreech and Josh “Peacock” Henderson and were willing to roll up their sleeves, get dirty, and show these guys doing what they live for, and I think the results speak for themselves. Peacock also happens to be a great filmer and backyard pool expert in his own right, which really helped when it came to filming some of the skate scenes.”

Rion Linderman was unavailable for comment, since he is preparing to go Down Under for the Bondi Bowl contest scheduled for Feb. 19th. Pretty sure he will be busting out a few of these in Bondi's Blue Bowl:

A Star is Born

Dragonslayer, a documentary featuring Skreech, will debut at the 2011 South by Southwest film festival in Austin TX on 3/13 - Hollywood-types are apparently hyped on it - it made "The Documentary Blog's" "Docs to Look Out For in 2011" list. But will it fly (or should I say roll?) in the skate community? Who knows? Who cares? Given the dismal track record of "skate-ploitation" flicks over the years we are not holding our breath. But the trailer looks promising:

One thing's for sure - if Skreech is involved, the skating is going to be legit....
